The Halcyon Story

My name is Rolf Stratford, I'm an Angling Trust Level 2 registered coach based in Hampshire, the home of the famous chalk streams the river Test, Itchen and Meon. I spend my time teaching fly fishing, guiding, or as a River Keeper on a stretch of the river Itchen.
I also assist on river restoration projects across Hampshire alongside Wessex Rivers Trust, Wild trout Trust and with citizen science projects like ARMI, Upper Itchen CIC and Angling Trust Water Quality Monitoring Network - all of whom are working towards cleaner more sustainable river habitats for nature and fishing
Inspired by grandad Eric, I began my fishing life as a keen seven year old, armed with a fishing set from Woolworths and a few clunky flies. The trout my grandad put me onto that day is still memorable 50 years later and it's that which is behind the Halcyon ethos. We want to help our clients open the door to the world of Fly Fishing, discover new skills and create their own memories.

Why Halcyon? The ancient Greeks believed the gods turned two distraught lovers into kingfishers — or “halcyon birds.” Thanks to divine assistance, these birds would always enjoy calm weather during nesting time, these periods became known as halcyon days.
The Kingfisher is well known as a good luck charm when fly fishing
